Investments and savings help us reach our financial goals.  There are low risk and high risk investments available the key is constructing a portfolio to match your comfort level and goals.  Our goal is to help educate you about the various options available so that you do reach your goals. Accounts

• Registered Retirement Accounts (RSP)
  • Money you deposit is invested free of tax until withdrawn
  • When you put money into your RSP you can deduct that amount annually on your tax return saving you tax
• Spousal Registered Retirement Accounts (SRSP)
  • Often used when one spouse doesn't work, the main income earner can put funds into spouses name which helps with lower taxes when withdrawn at retirement
• Locked In Retirement Accounts (LIRA)
  • Usually these are plans moved from an employers pension program to your Locked in Retirement Account when you leave an employer
• Group RSP Plans
  • Retirement savings plans sponsored by employers.  Employer and employee will contribute to the plan typically 
• Tax Free Savings Accounts (TFSA)
  • The opposite of an RSP and an excellent tool to help save for retirement.  Funds put into a TFSA are after tax and are invested on a tax free basis.  When funds are redeemed there is no tax on the growth. 
  • Can hold stocks, mutual funds, GIC's and many other products in a TFSA
• Non-Registered (cash) Accounts
  • Similar to  your bank savings account.  Investments are taxed.  Ideal to invest in RSP and TFSA before a non-registered account
• Retirement Income Funds (RIF)
  • At age 71 your RSP is changed to a RIF where you have to start taking some income from the plan
• Registered Education Savings Plans (RESP's)
  • Excellent program to save for children's education.  For every dollar you deposit the government adds 20 cents.  Government grant maxes out annually at $500 or $2,500 of deposits to the plan.

• Individual Stocks
  • Can be held in all types of investment accounts
  • Low cost investment products providing long term growth and income (dividends) in many cases
• Mutual Funds
  • Professionally managed investment products that hold a basket of stocks picked by the manager
  • Excellent tool for quick access to stock market and diversification
• Exchange Traded Funds (ETF's)
  • Similar to mutual funds but lower cost as they typically are not managed and simply track an index, for example the Canadian stock market TSX ETF would hold the top 60 Canadian companies 
• Principal Protected & Autocallable Notes
  • Good options in today's low interest rate environment, providing potentially higher returns with protection of principal
• Alternative Investments
  • Becoming more and more popular as these investments typically don't move in similar fashion to stock market.  Real estate is a good example.
• Guaranteed Investment Certificates
  • Provide a guaranteed rate of return over 1-5 yr periods typically.  Funds are locked in for that duration.
